First and foremost, my initial action would be to not enter in a clinical drug trial due to the fact that they are extremely ineffective and inefficient, producing less than optimal results. According to an article on [Only admins are allowed to see this link] “RCT’s (randomized clinical tests) are inefficient and have become more complex, time-consuming, and expensive”. (Bryan Luce, 2009) In one study done between 28 tests performed from 1999-2002 and 29 tests done from 2003-2006, the average time from when a patient agrees to participate in testing to the conclusion of the final testing increased by 70%. (Bryan Luce, 2009)
But despite the length in time, the biggest problem I have with randomized clinical drug trials is that they are completely unnecessary. The Declaration of Helsinki, which is a statement of ethical principles involving research on human subjects states that ““In any medical study, every patient—including those of a control group, if any—should be assured of the best proven diagnostic and therapeutic methods”. (World Medical Association, 2011) If following these principles literally, it is found that there is absolutely no need for clinical drug trials at all. According to Susan Ellenberg and Robert Temple, “the requirement of the Declaration of Helsinki that all patients receive the “best proven diagnostic and therapeutic methods would bar all clinical trials, even historically controlled ones, because when effective treatment exists the patients receiving the investigational treatment are not getting the best proven treatment.” (Simon, 2000) This means that all clinical drug trials are doing is using our bodies to test a type of medication or treatment for a disease we have, while more effective treatment is available to us.
All in all, randomized clinical drug testing is unnecessary and pointless; it is holding an affected patient back from receiving the medication or treatment they need.
